Shake it up

Shake it up

There are few dilemmas in life that cannot be improved upon with a tall glass of water and a brisk walk around the block.

Whatever negativity you are feeling - frustrated, overwhelmed, confused, angry, grumpy, tired, fat, bored, broke, sore, - you will feel better after 10 minutes of exercise and some hydration. You may not have solved your problem, but your head will be clearer and you will be more energized.

And if a brisk walk is a habit you practice you will find that the 10 -minute walk often turns into a 20 or 30 minute walk leading to increased clarity of mind and positivity of spirit. And more water.

Often of course, we choose something else to ameliorate our stress – a donut, a coffee,  surfing the net, a cigarette. Or we just keep plowing ahead on the same path making no progress and getting increasingly frustrated, overwhelmed, confused, angry, grumpy, tired, fat, bored, broke, sore…

Some say the definition if insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It ain’t going to happen.

I have written at length about the importance of setting goals, of leveraging small victories into larger successes, of competition and commitment.

Today I simply suggest you shake it up. If its not working, take a different approach. Step away from the situation for 10 minutes. If you can literally leave the situation and take a brisk walk around the block, do so. Leave the building. Leave your house. Leave the room.

If that is not possible, then figuratively leave the room. Shut your eyes. Listen to the sound of your breath entering and exiting your body. Feel the weight of your bones resting on the chair.

Take 10 minutes and do something just slightly different.

Some argue there is nothing that can’t be fixed with a glass of wine and a hot iron. But I can finish neither of those in 10 minutes so for today, I will take a brisk walk around the block which will probably turn into a 30 or 40 minute run.

Tonight maybe I will have a glass of wine and fix my hair.
